LGBTQ+ Law Volunteering

Full or limited scope representation:
  • Time Commitment: ~3-10 hours
  • Level of Service: Extended/full representation
  • Experience required? No prior experience is required.
  • Description: Assist clients with name changes and identity document corrections, such as birth certificates, driver’s licenses and ID cards, social security cards, and passports. Clients receiving full representation are those who need additional support to complete the process or who have unique complexities that will require explanation or additional filings. Clients receiving limited scope representation are those who just need help with a specific step in the process. Volunteers should have a minimum comfort level with litigation. 
Advice and limited services appointments:
  • Time Commitment: ~1-2 hours per appointment
  • Level of Service: Advice/limited services
  • Experience required? No prior experience is required.
  • Description: Advise and assist clients with name changes and identity document corrections. At the meeting, you will talk your client through the process and form completion, additionally assisting in identifying any complications that may be present and demystifying the court process.
Pop-up In-person and virtual clinics:
  • Time Commitment: ~3-5 hours, including event time and preparation
  • Level of Service: Advice/limited services
  • Experience required? No prior experience is required.
  • Locations: Varies
  • Description: Provide advice and/or limited services to people seeking to change their names or update ID documents. Volunteers registered to do this work will get updates on times and places of clinics as they are determined.
VLN Core Training: ID Document Corrections in Minnesota

  • Description: This training covers how to assist clients in name changes and gender marker corrections on ID documents. It includes guidance on trauma-informed lawyering, working with trans and BIPOC clients, and managing legal risk. This CLE includes reference materials to support effective client advocacy.
