Deportation Preparedness Volunteering
- Time Commitment: 1-4 hours, depending on the case and whether an interpreter is needed
- Level of Service: advice and possibly brief services drafting power-of-attorney and delegation of parental authority forms
- Experience required? No experience is required. Entry-level cases are available.
- Description: Advise clients who may be at risk of deportation regarding what steps they may take to mitigate the collateral consequences to themselves and their families such as arranging for someone else to manage their financial affairs via a power-of-attorney or care for their children via a delegation of parental authority.
- Important Note Regarding Limitations of This Volunteer Opportunity: This volunteer opportunity does not include any immigration law issues the clients may have and is strictly limited to providing advice about civil legal issues under Minnesota state law.
Minnesota Deportation Preparedness Manual – A Guide for People At-Risk of Deportation: How to Prepare Your Assets and Your Family
- Description: This manual addresses a variety of Minnesota state law topics that may be relevant to taking care of financial issues, minor children and personal property.

CLE: Introduction to Minnesota Family Deportation Preparedness: Legal Tools for Families at Risk of Deportation
- Date: July 30, 2025
- Length: 1 hour for 1 standard CLE credit (on-demand)
- Description: This CLE focuses on potential actions that people who are at risk of deportation can take to mitigate the disruption to their lives and the lives of family members remaining in Minnesota in the event of detention or deportation. We will not address immigration legal issues but rather will focus on the myriad other legal issues that someone might encounter as a collateral consequence of being taken into detention or deported. The CLE will cover an introduction to delegations of parental authority and power of attorney forms, as well as cover topics such as what might happen to someone’s rental unit, personal property, unpaid debts, and automobiles in the event that they are taken into detention or deported.
