SUMMARY:July Housing Law Chat & Chew
DESCRIPTION:The Chat and Chew is a time for VLN housing staff and volunteers to eat a (virtual) lunch together\, chat about a housing topic\, and socialize with one another. This is an informal event. There will be no power point presentations\, but instead a brief introduction to a topic by a VLN staff member\, followed by a discussion. Volunteers are encouraged to share stories of their experiences with housing cases with one another\, and maybe learn a little – and of course\, do some chewing too! This is casual and for all our volunteers – brand new and experienced alike! \nJoin us for the July Housing Law Chat & Chew\, where we’ll explore the importance of having an attorney at housing court clinics! We’ll discuss how VLN’s mission aligns with the work at our Anoka\, Hennepin\, and Ramsey County clinics\, highlight how staff step in to cover when volunteers aren’t available\, and showcase the powerful impact attorneys have through advice\, brief services\, and full representation for clients. \n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/t3hvhj__SKqVIhG2stQxRA

DESCRIPTION:Many people who are convicted of crimes in Minnesota state court suffer collateral consequences as a result of convictions long after the terms or their sentences are completed.  Many former defendants find themselves denied employment and rental housing opportunities as a result of the existence of their criminal records and the increasing availability of information regarding charges and convictions available online.  Volunteer Lawyers Network is currently experiencing a surge in potential clients who need free legal help determining whether and when their criminal records might be eligible for expungement.  If you are interested in helping people with this all-too-common legal problem but don’t know anything about criminal expungement\, then this CLE is for you.  This introductory CLE will explain how you can volunteer through Volunteer Lawyers Network to advise clients regarding the basics of criminal records expungement in Minnesota\, including the differences between statutory expungement\, inherent authority expungement\, and prosecutor-led expungement.  This CLE will cover come crime-free waiting periods that former defendants are required to meet in order to be eligible for statutory expungement.  The focus of this CLE will be on how Volunteer Lawyers Network operates our criminal expungement merit-screening services and how you can volunteer with VLN to help our clients! \nPresenters:\nElizabeth Fowlds is the Criminal Expungement Resource Attorney and Program Manager at Volunteer Lawyers Network\, a position she has held since July 2023. SUMMARY:April Housing Law Chat & Chew
\nOn April 7\, 2025 we will discuss the Habitability Fund.  What is it?  Where did it come from?  Who is eligible?  How do you apply?  What are we looking for in an application?  What are the guidelines for approval?  We will discuss all of these things and explaining when clients can get assistance paying rent into court.  \n\n\n\n\n\nRegister now: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/KLnBVMioQUa7fj18ykMBNA

SUMMARY:Core Training: Special Immigrant Juvenile Status - The First Step of Obtaining the Predicate Order

We will explore the fundamentals of an at-risk guardianship case and adding in the request for special findings.\n\nPlease note: each hour of this training is a separate CLE with its own CLE code. You are welcome to attend one or both CLEs. There will be some overlap in the CLEs. \nPresenter: Kara Rieke\, Family Resource Attorney\, VLN.
