Given the turmoil in which the U.S. economy is embroiled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, employees are more likely to find their jobs and careers in precarious positions than at any point in time since the Great Depression. Low-wage employees may be particularly vulnerable to exploitation from employers as other employment prospects become limited, and many laid-off workers may find themselves navigating the unemployment benefits system for the first time. As such, civil legal services providers are expecting to see an increase in the amount of calls from low-income clients requesting free legal assistance regarding employment law issues and unemployment compensation denial appeals.

This free two-hour CLE will be an introduction to basic employment law concepts, claims, and issues, as well as an introduction to advising employees who have recently lost their jobs about unemployment compensation benefits and how to navigate the appeals process when denied benefits.

This CLE is organized by Volunteer Lawyers Network and the Legal Services State Support Office and will feature the following presenters:

• Siv Dobrovolny, Strategic Compliance Lead – Labor Standards, Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry
• Areti Georgopoulos, Attorney at Law, Harmony Law Firm, PLLC
• Ben Kwan, Managing Partner, Haller Kwan, LLP
