Volunteer Lawyers Network, The Advocates for Human Rights, AILA Minnesota/Dakotas, & Minnesota Legal Services State Support present:

Navigating the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) Process

Over a year after the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan, many Afghans remain in need of help navigating the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) process. The SIV program provides a pathway to legal permanent residence for certain Afghan nationals that were employed by or on behalf of the U.S. government in Afghanistan. Without assistance, the process is nearly impossible for evacuees to navigate. This CLE will provide a synopsis of the SIV program, explain to prospective volunteers how to navigate each step in the SIV application process, and give an overview of other potential relief available to Afghan evacuees. Pro bono opportunities to take SIV cases will also be discussed.

Presenters:
Zack Albun, The Advocates for Human Rights, Staff Attorney
Stephanie Morales, Advising Attorney
Katherine Veldhuizen, The Advocates for Human Rights, Program Coordinator
Sheila Stuhlman, Stuhlman Law LLC, SIV Volunteer Attorney
John Weber, Volunteer Lawyers Network, Afghan Legal Project Attorney
Mirella Ceja-Orozco, Chair – AILA Minnesota/Dakotas Executive Committee

CLE Credit: 1.5 standard credits to be requested.

Cost: Free. Persons attending the CLE will be asked to provide pro bono services through the
Afghan Legal Project.
