Debt Collection Volunteer Resources

Volunteer Lawyers Network could use the help of litigators who have experience with debt collection litigation and post-judgment collection action such as garnishment of financial institution accounts or earnings as well as Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA) and Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) claims. Volunteer attorneys are needed to call 4-6 low-income clients during a monthly phone advice shift. Clients often need advice about what happens if they stop paying a credit card account, what happens if they get sued, what exemptions they may have to claim if they face garnishment action after entry of judgment, and how to stop unfair or abusive debt collection practices or credit reporting errors. Please contact Heidi Huber at heidi.huber@vlnmn.org with questions about volunteering to provide debtor-creditor phone advice.

Requirements for Volunteering

Experience with debt collection litigation in Minnesota courts is required. Consumer rights attorneys are the ideal candidates to volunteer for the debtor-creditor phone advice program.

Trainings and Frequently Used Resources

VLN can provide volunteer attorneys with resources that help them identify what forms of income may be claimed as exempt under federal or Minnesota law. Contact Civil Program Manager with any questions regarding exemptions.
